The Pomor Family.
The Pomor family was really big. There were up to 30 people in it. They formed an independent team in the hunting and fishing season. They together had a house, land instruments, domestic animals, boats, land and money.
The family life was regulated by long- living rules. All the members of a big family had their rights and responsibilities. The father was the head. He looked after males in the family during hunting and fishing. The mother was responsible for the house and the cooking. When men went hunting women took all the duties and did a really hard work at home as well as in the yard. When one of the brothers had a big growing family he built a new house and became independent. Everyone in the family helped him to build the house.
Children got ready for their future jobs from the early age. Children under 7-8 helped about the house and looked after the younger relatives. After the age of 8 boys went fishing together with fathers. Girls usually did housekeeping, gardening, mushrooming. They also learnt knitting, weaving, embroidery and needlework, cooking and bread making.
The atmosphere of love, respect and at the same time independence reigned in every Pomor family. |
